This past weekend Maarit had lots of fun! Friday morning, gardening with mommy and playing roll the basketball with daddy. (Maarit loves all things bat and ball, her current favorite toys are twins bat, wiffle ball bat, soccer ball and colorful bouncy ball she stole from friend Aiden.)
I realize this picture looks completely staged, but I assure you it is not. Maarit crawled over to these little flowers and stuck her face into them. I was lucky to capture her in the act.

Then it was on to Two Harbors for the weekend. Justin was helping his dad with a roofing project and Nana and Maarit and I spent time at TH Heritage Days. Daddy and Papa took a break to take Maarit to the parade. Here she is waving at paradees as they went by. You can see she took her first parade very seriously.
As always when in TH some Lake Superior splashing must take place.

The next day we went to the Duluth Zoo where, promptly after catching Maarit checking out this little goat, the batteries in the camera died. So, I was unable to get a picture of the huge grizzly bear, Trouble, making friends with Maarit. She was standing up (with Daddy's help) by the glass and he came over and pressed the top of his head on the glass right by her face. (Like Karhu does when she wants a pat.) Maarit liked that and started patting the glass and 'talking' to him. As she patted on the glass he bumped his nose at it and tried to nip at her fingers on the other side. It was incredibly cute. Maarit and Trouble the Grizzly Bear bonded. He was probably thinking she looked like a tasty snack, but she was pretty thrilled with the attention. An interesting side note is that Trouble was a wild Grizzly who repeatedly broke into the Anchorage, AK zoo and was finally taken in, but he didn't get along with the bear there so he flew on a Northwest flight to MSP and came to live at the Duluth Zoo. The little info on Trouble said that he 'handled his flight pretty well'. I wonder if the passengers knew there was a Grizzly bear on their plane!
