Sailing with Friends

Last Sunday we took a sailing trip with our friends, Aaron and Annemieke around the fjord and to the little island of Lindøy.  It was an amazing day to ride in a sailboat.  Maarit had a wonderful time.

Before we left we took some pictures of the flowers in our garden.

Maarit was a bit nervous about going on the boat at first. You can just see the apprehension in her expression, she was quite brave though! Aaron and Anne have a little racing boat, so it is not a huge boat to take out on to the ocean by any means.  The boardwalk to the boat was moving and bouncing in the waves as well so Maarit practiced getting her sea legs before we even got on the boat!

Justin and Aaron and Anne get the boat ready for sailing. They are readying the sails in this photo.

And we're off!  Justin ties off the lines once they get the sails fully hoisted and true sailing is underway.

Maarit had a chance to help secure the lines!

Aaron relaxing as the wind just carried us out into the fjord.

We saw a pod of porpoises!  They were so fun to watch.

When we reached the island we had a picnic and explored a bit along the hiking trails. The island of Lindøy is actually home to a secluded school for behaviorally challenged children. There is a farm and houses where the kids and staff work and stay on site.  Lindøy has housed a reform school for boys since the early 1800s, but the original structure burned down.  Now there is only a small school and farm and apparently not very many children are placed there.

The sheep herd and Highland Cattle were especially fun to see.  They belong to the school.

A view of the picnic area on Lindøy.

Sailing home!
