Our May has been cold rainy weeks followed by beautiful weekends, so it really couldn't be more perfect. Gus likes to get outside no matter what the weather, so we had to find a full-body rain suit for him like we had for Maarit in Norway. He has gotten a lot of use out of this one. He stomps around the yard in his rain boots and doesn't mind if it is raining, hailing, or if the sun is shining. He is a Norwegian boy for sure- outdoors no matter the weather!
Maarit's interest in baseball continues this spring and she is looking forward to t-ball through Biwabik Community Rec. She likes to practice her hitting...but doesn't always keep her eyes on the ball.
We were so excited to have loons on our lake, but lately they haven't been spotted. We hope they are just quietly nesting somewhere near. Every once in a while we hear them in the morning, but mostly we have a family of geese and lots of ducks. A wood duck family lives in the woods near our house, they have been fun to watch.
We have been watching our beach slowly flood. Then we figured we'd reached the high water mark and things were turning for the better. The water finally went down so Justin put out the dock. Sadly, the rains returned and now we have lost one whole chunk of our yard and our dock is likely to float away (we have rocks on it holding it down!). The river that flows into our lake is still extremely high, I wonder when the water will come down? Usually our beach is pretty big, but we had to pull all the boats up onto the grass because the whole beach is submerged.
We took a trip to Duluth in the beginning of May to play at the PBS KIDS Carnival. Karhu was happy come along on a trip, she got to spend the day at Nana and Papa's with the kids. Maarit liked her doggy-pillow.
The highlight of Maarit's carnival time was seeing WordGirl, her favorite hero.
Gus's highlight was that there were balloons everywhere.
Maarit had also seen adds for the velcro wall. She was pumped to try it, but when the time came to actually JUMP on the wall...she chickened out and just 'stuck' herself to the wall. It was hilarious. She couldn't get herself off.
Our little ones had fun being on TV with the 'green screen' which made parts of their bodies invisible and Maarit loved the snake who visited from the zoo.
The carnival was held at one of the new Duluth schools, way up on the hill. It was quite a view.
We played at Lester Park. Gus and I had fun by the river. We picked out rocks, tasted them and then tossed them in the river. We could have done this for hours!
Maarit showed off her amazing jumping skills.
And Justin and I got to have a date which included a hike, some shopping, dinner and more walks along Lake Superior.
It was still icy in Duluth, but the world here on the Range is starting to look pretty green. We had the little ones out helping us 'stain' our new deck with blue food coloring and water. It was great fun in the hot, hot, 65 degree sun. Notice that Maarit is mostly naked. I guess that is what we get for taking our little girl to Norway during her formative years. She now has the classic Norwegian "If the temperature rises above 60 degrees you must get as naked as possible" life philosophy. I guess there are worse ways to live! =)

Over the lovely Mother's Day weekend we bought a big trampoline and spent lots of time jumping and playing. We are working on the kiddos' swing set and getting our yard ready for gardens. I made a huge rock garden and moved more paving stone and huge rocks than I ever want to again. Last weekend we hosted a Syttende Mai party to celebrate Norway's national day. We had such a nice outdoor party playing Konge Pinne and relaxing. It was so lovely both weekends we spent the whole weekend outside playing and working and I realize that I didn't take a single picture of either weekend. We were having far to much fun working, playing and gardening! It looks like our beautiful weekends in May are supposed to continue (hooray!) and the school year is very, very, very near over. Summer time fun, here we come!
